A. Restrictive relative clauses ( Meänh ñeà quan heä giôùi haïn)
- Duøng ñeå boå nghóa cho danh töø ñöùng tröôùc, laø meänh ñeà quan troïng cuûa caâu. Neáu boû ñi, meänh ñeà chính khoâng coù yù nghóa roõ raøng
Ex: The man whom you met yesterday came again.
This is the book that I told you about.
B. Non – restrictive clauses ( Meänh ñeà quan heä khoâng giôùi haïn)
- Duøng ñeå boå nghóa cho danh töø ñöùng tröôùc, ñöa theâm thoâng tin ñeå giaûi thích. Meänh ñeà naøy thöôøng taùch khoûi meänh ñeà chính baèng daáu phaåy hay daáu gaïch ngang. Neáu boû ñi, meänh ñeà chính vaãn coù yù nghóa roõ raøng. Ñaïi töø “That” khoâng duøng trong meänh ñeà naøy.
Ex: His father, who is company director, will come here tomorrow.
C. Connective relative clauses:
- Duøng ñeå giaûi thích caû caâu. Chæ ñaïi töø WHICH ñöôïc duøng vaø coù 1 daáu phaåy ñeå taùch 2 meänh ñeà. Meänh ñeà naøy luoân ñöùng ñaàu caâu
Ex: Tom passed the exam. That made his parents happy.
⭢ Tom passed the exam, which made his parents happy.
Chuù yù: Caùc caáu truùc môû ñaàu cho meänh ñeà quan heä vôùi:
I tried on several pairs of shoes, none of which fitted me
I have 2 sisters, both of whom are teachers.
